No one is sure if or when Kroger (owner of King Soopers) and Albertsons (owner of Safeway) will merge. It’s been two years since announcing their plan. Then, the Federal Trade Commission and a number of states, including Colorado, sued to stop it. Now, Kroger and Albertsons have released a list of which stores they plan to sell to C&S Wholesale Grocers ahead of an August trial. Selling the stores averts any layoffs or closures, the two companies claim.
According to the latest plan, most stores are in the Western United States, where Kroger and Albertsons have the most overlap. Of the 579 grocery stores to be sold, 91 are in Colorado and include all Colorado Safeway locations (owned by Albertsons). No King Soopers or City Market locations will be sold.
C&S will keep the rights to use the Safeway brand name in Colorado.
According to Kroger and Albertsons, C&S has promised that “no stores will close as a result of the merger and that all frontline associates will remain employed.”
Whether the merger goes through is up to the FTC and likely the courts. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has sued to block the merger asserting it would harm smaller communities and create monopolies.
Many industry insiders question whether C&S has the ability to successfully operate such a large number of grocery stores and might have to shutter those in smaller markets or those with nearby alternatives (such as King Soopers).
