As of July 28, 2025, Target will no longer offer price matching for two of its biggest competitors — Amazon and Walmart. The only price matching the popular retailer will honor are those price differences within its own stores and website. That means, if you spot a better price at another Target location, online at Target.com or within the Target app, they will match the price. And that’s it.

Bargain hunters are well-versed in the art of price matching. That’s when shoppers find a better price on a particular item and are able to get the same price at a competing retailer. You simply show proof of the sale at the customer service counter and they’ll match the price. However, it’s not as easy as you’d think. The price matching policy varies by store — with many different limits and restrictions.
In the beginning, many stores were quite liberal in their price matching. The proof needed to get the sale price was open-ended.
Any ad or screenshot could get you the discount. In addition, many retailers would do a price match for just about any other competitor, including online businesses.
However, over the years, many stores have tightened their policy or ended it altogether — due to fraud. Some dubious customers were using fake ads as proof or demanding price matching on unbelievably low prices.
As a result, many retailers began including more “fine print” on how their price matching policy worked, including specific requirements on what qualified as proof and limits on what other retailers they would match.
Nowadays, bargain hunters know getting a sale price matched can be an arduous task, with so many restrictions in place. And it’s getting even more challenging thanks to the changes Target is making to its price matching policy.
What do you think of the changes Target is making to its price matching policy?
