National Crayon Day is full of creativity and color! And Staples is making the colorful day a little brighter with a big giveaway on March 31, 2026. According to Crayola, the “modern” crayon originated in Europe, initially made from a mixture of charcoal and oil, later replaced by powdered pigments. Wax was later substituted for oil, making the sticks sturdier and easier to handle.

Then, in 1902, Crayola Crayons were invented by Binney & Smith and first offered for sale in 1903. The trade name “Crayola” was coined by Mrs. Edwin Binney, combining “craie” (French for chalk stick) and “oleaginous” (oily).
Crayola manufactures more than 3 billion crayons annually, primarily made from paraffin wax and color pigment.
To celebrate National Crayon Day, Staples is giving away a FREE 24-pack of Crayola crayons with any purchase of $1.50 or more on March 31, 2026 at participating locations. (Only crayons with SKU 299198 are included in the giveaway. If you’re unsure, ask an employee for assistance.)
