Officially confirmed: The expiration date for the FREE product at Safeway coupons (Instant Winner) has been extended to July 28 — paper game tickets only. All other game prizes (Collect & Win, Instant Win, Digital Instant Win and Token Redemption Prizes) and cents-off coupons must still be claimed by May 28. (The extension does not apply to any other prizes, including Shutterfly, Starbucks, Redbox, etc.)
For Safeway shoppers who enjoy playing the “grocery game” (as in “How much can I save this trip?”), you can play an actual game and win big prizes. Yes, Safeway’s popular Monopoly game is back!
Through Tuesday, May 5, earn “Shop, Play, Win!” game pieces and fill your game board for your shot at $250 million in prizes, including three $1 million cash prizes, a vacation home, a boat, home theater, gift cards and lots of smaller prizes, including cash and products. Though the game officially ends on May 5, you can still redeem game pieces and coupons through May 28.
It’s easy to play. Simply pick up a Monopoly game ticket every time you shop at participating locations. You can earn “bonus” game tickets, by purchasing specially-tagged products. Inside each game ticket is a special discount, a code to use for online play or an Instant Win Prize — plus there are two game markers.
Pick up a game board both at the customer service desk or just about every checkout lane. You stick the game pieces to the board and, if you collect all of the required game pieces for a specific game area, you win that prize.
You can also register online at ShopPlayWin.com. If you find a code in your game ticket, you enter that 16 letter/digit sequence online to see if you are a potential winner. Every online code that is played is automatically entered into the Monopoly Second Chance Sweepstakes.
In past years, only two people have actually won the million dollars using the game pieces. The other $1 million winners all came through the Second Chance drawing, so it does pay to play online as well.
Because there are so many pieces and tickets, and for convenience, Safeway also offers an app “Shop, Play, Win” available both in the Apple App Store and Google Play. For many, the app will save lots of time (from manually entering codes) and makes tracking all of your game pieces so much easier. (The app has been known to be fussy at times, but it does work.)
You can use the app to scan online game codes, instead of manually typing them in to the online system. This is a screenshot of how the app looks on a smartphone:
Each time you scan an online game code you either win a prize (say $5 off the purchase of a $50 gift card) or “tokens” (the number varies from 1 to whatever). When you accumulate tokens you can use them to enter various sweepstakes such as a daily $1,000 Cash Sweepstakes, a vacation, new car, private movie screenings and more. You can enter multiple times.
Tokens can also be redeemed for rewards such as grocery gift cards, discounts on gas or groceries, Fandango rewards and free products. Each reward has a specific number of tokens you must spend to redeem it.
For example, a $5 grocery gift card will cost you 80 tokens. Free products such as donuts or French bread range from 20 to 60 tokens. Redeem for any of those products or rewards and they are loaded automatically to your Just For U rewards card.
Even better, the app can be used to scan the square 2-D barcode on the back of the game marker section of the game ticket. It’s wise to scan it first, before pulling apart the game piece. The barcode reflects the two game pieces in the game ticket.
By scanning the bar code, the app keeps track of game markers and will let you know if you have all the pieces for a specific prize. Just because the tracker note you have all the pieces to win, you are not a winner yet. You must keep all of the game pieces (even after scanning), in order to redeem them for the prize.
The app makes it easier to keep track of your pieces, especially when you start receiving lots of duplicate game pieces. (We know we’re not alone from having blue-stained fingers in the past from opening so many game pieces.)
MHOTC Tip: It might be easier to just scan the 2-D code and not worry about actually sticking the game pieces on the board. Just keep all of your game pieces in a sandwich or gallon bag and, if you have collected all of the right pieces for a prize, just fish through the bag for the winning pieces needed for redemption.
Even though the game is very popular, the odds of winning can be a challenge. It’s easier than you think because each game piece is labeled with the prize for which it’s valid. Just to be clear, once again, you must keep all of your game pieces, even after scanning. Do not throw them away. You need to the physical game tickets for redemption. Of course, you still want to open your game piece to see, if you’ve earned an online code, coupon or instant prize.
For even more convenience, you can tie your Shop Play Win account to your Just for U account. As a result, any prizes you win, such as FREE products, discounts or gift cards, are automatically added to your Just for U account.
Then, simply enter your phone number at checkout or the gas pump to redeem. This is a great feature, especially when you accumulate tons of smaller FREE grocery items. The discounts are automatically applied at checkout.

Our good bargain-hunting friend Eva Fry of Super Safeway has compiled a guide on how to play Safeway Monopoly. Her post goes into greater detail about the ins and outs of the game, including the game board, game pieces, playing online, using the app and more. Wouldn’t you love to win one million dollars, right?
If you win any prizes, let us know. Good luck!
