It’s FREE on Wednesday, August 15 at the One-Day Academy hosted by The Academy For Lifelong Learning from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. In between three riveting sessions, you can meet course leaders, visit with other Academy members, enjoy Happy Hour and snacks, learn about other the entire 2018 fall schedule and register for classes. Presentations include:
2 p.m. –- Dr. Kathleen Hynes – The ACLU: Why We Do What We Do
The ACLU is almost 100 years old and continues to protect, defend and extend the civil rights and liberties of all people. Learn about some of the major issues the ACLU tackles and why. These include: Freedom of Religion, Reforming the Criminal Justice, Returning Voting Rights, Ending the Death Penalty and Government Transparency.
3 p.m. — Paul Turelli – Rock’s Vocal Revolution via California’s Laurel Canyon
Get a glimpse of what’s to come this fall in Paul Turelli’s latest Academy course. Laurel Canyon may be a narrow strip running from Sunset Strip thru Hollywood Hills, but it is the home of a great “west-coast music” explosion. Performers like The Beachboys, The Byrds, The Mama’s and Papa’s, The Monkees, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, and many more, got their start in the “Canyon of Dreams.” You’ll be toe tappin’ and reliving history with Paul and other Academy fans.
4 p.m. — Shellie Hochstadt – The Patterns of History
Academy history pro Shellie Hochstadt uses examples from her popular course “A Global Romp: History of the 16th and 17th Century,” to look at patterns in history. In other words, what we know, what we think we know, and how we study it. Examine world empires during this time and how exploration moves on to the development of Europe: God, gold and glory.
