For more than 125 years jazz music has wafted across Denver’s City Park. This summer is no exception with City Park Jazz, Sundays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., June 2 through August 4 at the Bandstand by City Park Pavilion on Ferril Lake. The 10-concert series is FREE with about 5,000 jazz fans attending each performance. For a map to the location, scroll to the bottom of this post. Here’s the calendar:
June 2 — Emma Mayes & The Hip
June 9 — Joe Smith & The Spicy Pickles
June 16 — Hazel Miller
June 23 — Dotsero
June 30 — Buckner FunkenJazz
July 7 — Invisible Bird
July 14 — Conjunto Colores
July 21 — Brass Band Extravaganza (note time: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.) featuring Badda Boom Brass Band, Tivoli Club Brass Band and Guerrilla Fanfare
July 28 — Freddy Rodriguez & the Jazz Connection
August 4 — The Heavy Heavies featuring Venus Cruz
People can pack picnics (coolers with wheels are especially recommended) or purchase food on-site. Twenty local food and fashion trucks will be at the park.
Those in the know suggest you bring blankets or folding chairs and umbrellas or raingear in case of a Colorado shower. Concerts are held rain or shine.
Free parking is available at the Denver Zoo and Denver Museum of Nature & Science lots and garage.
A special lot adjacent to the Bandstand for seniors and the handicapped is available after 4 p.m. through the entrance from Colorado Blvd at 22nd or 23rd and following the road along the north side of the lake.
