In ancient times, people grew afraid when each day had fewer hours of sunshine than the day before and feared that one day there would be no daylight left. Winter solstice, on December 21, was the darkest, most frightening day of them all. Eventually they realized that after this day each year the sun started moving towards them again, and that is still celebrated, especially at the Wild Bear Nature Center.
During the FREE Winter Solstice Celebration from Sunday through Tuesday, December 18 to 21, the Nature Center will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Come and enjoy making candles and other wintertime crafts, story time, musical guests, light drinks and snacks, plus an astronomy room to explore the science behind this special time of year.
Explore new exhibits, spend time with friends and family, and take home a special handmade treasure. Don’t forget to get outside and check out a special solstice snowshoe hike with experienced naturalists.
