Free Ranger-Led First Day Hikes

POSTED BY
Claire

This year, Coloradans can join FREE ranger-led outings on January 1, 2025 at dozens of Colorado State Parks (including Staunton, St. Vrain, Chatfield, Barr Lake and Roxborough). During First Day Hikes, each park offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the new year, with most parks offering guided hikes and some parks providing multiple options to choose from, allowing you to select the time and route you prefer.

Many parks also offer refreshments and FREE giveaways. Check your favorite park for specifics, times and other regulations. A few parks require advance registration.

Since many people have never visited our state parks in winter, a First Day Hike can be a new experience in a familiar place.

The distance and rigor of the hikes vary from park to park, but they all aim to create a fun experience for the whole family. Savor the beauty of the natural, cultural and historical resources our state parks offer, and be inspired to take advantage of these local treasures throughout the year.

Hikers can choose guided hikes that fit their comfort levels including mountain and hill climbing, walks along lakes, exploring trails that wind through forests, wildlife expeditions, and even adaptive adventures at various parks.

Bring snacks and water, dress in layers and be prepared with traction and/or trekking poles for winter hiking in snow or on icy trails; if there is snow, consider bringing snowshoes.

Hikes are FREE but visitors must possess a valid parks pass.

Park fees (about $10 per vehicle) will apply or buy an annual pass ($80) for unlimited entry to all Colorado State Parks for a 12-month period.

And, remember that now when you renew your car’s license you can add a Keep Colorado Wild Pass for just $29, that gives you car, bike or foot entry into all Colorado State Parks.

“Hike-y” New Year.
