After a successful premiere season of bringing free Shakespeare to the Denver metro area, Shakespeare in the Wild is back with “As You Like It” on August 18 to 27, 2023. A hilarious spectacle of gender-bending, buffoonery, and tomfoolery, the play is fun for the whole family. Performances are free and held outdoors at DeKoevend Park at Goodson Rec Center in Centennial. No reservations are required, but RSVP via their website is encouraged.
Shakespeare’s exploration of the performance of gender in “As You Like It” resonates strongly today.
Director Sam Gregory is interested in Rosalind’s evolution from a fawning ingenue to an empowered woman, via a reinvention of herself as Ganymede: a man. (Rosalind’s love interest, Orlando, has his own journey — with Rosalind’s influence– from a brutish youth to an enlightened young man.)
The production is directed by Sam Gregory, well-known and beloved by area audiences for his many performances with Denver Center Theatre Company, Curious Theatre Company, BETC, and others.
Audiences are encouraged to bring a blanket, a picnic, and the whole family. (People are welcome to bring chairs if they require them.)
The performance area is 900 feet from ADA parking. A paved path leads (400 ft) to a dirt path (500 ft) to the grass seating area. There will be one golf cart to help transport those who need it to that seating area.
A Sensory Box will be available for patrons on request (sunglasses, muting earplugs, fidgets).
