Who Has the Best Price on Avocados in Denver?

POSTED BY
Bryan

Sunday may be a big day for football, but it’s also a huge day for avocados! That means grocery stores are offering their biggest sales and best prices on avocados this week. In the U.S., Super Bowl Sunday is the second biggest day in food consumption. It’s estimated 53.5 million pounds are eaten on Super Sunday in the United States.

More than eight million pounds of guacamole are dipped into with tortilla chips or spread on sandwiches on the big game day every year. (Did you know more avocados are sold for the big game day than any other time of the year?)

And anyone who makes the popular green dip knows it can be pricey. Avocados aren’t cheap! However, our team has done all the work for guac-makers on a budget by “scooping out” the best prices in town.

Plus, the size of the avocados on sale varies by store, so don’t forget to factor that in when gathering all of the ingredients.

You might need fewer avocados, if they’re large or jumbo. (Size is noted, when possible.)

And, as always, shop early for the best selection of ripe and ready-to-use little green fruits. (And, yes, technically avocados are a fruit!)

Bagged vs. individual? Many stores sell bagged avocados (usually 4- to 6-ct.), which usually offer a slight discount per avocado versus buying them individually. However, in some cases, you’re getting better savings by purchasing avocados individually at the sale price rather than by the bag. Always do the math first!

The prices are valid through February 11, 2024. Plus, stores may require their respective shopper’s loyalty card to get the discounted price.

If you’re looking for more Super Bowl Sunday specials, check out our round-up of deals here.

Here’s our price-check on avocado prices in Denver:

Price may vary by location.

King Soopers — Large avocado for 99¢ (limit 5) — digital coupon required

Natural Grocers — Organic avocado for 99¢ (limit 3) — for {N}power loyalty members only

BEST DEAL: Safeway — Medium avocado for 77¢ (limit 10, Safeway card required) or Signature Farms Hass avocados (5-ct. bag, making each avocado 35¢) for $2.47 (digital coupon required, limit 5 bags)

Save-A-Lot — Large avocado for $1.50

Sprouts Farmers Market — Medium avocado for $1.67

Target — Avocado for 75¢ or 3 avocados for $2

Trader Joe’s — Avocado for $1.99

Walmart — Avocado for 70¢

Whole Foods Market — Medium avocado for $1.25 — Amazon Prime membership required

If you’re in a rush, most grocery stores sell ready-made guacamole in the deli. Don’t expect it to be cheap. However, it’s convenient — just take off the lid and you’re ready to start dipping!

And no double-dipping on the guac. Everyone agrees, that’s a major party foul!
