If you live in Lakewood, you’re definitely familiar with the Safeway at 9160 W. Colfax Ave. It’s been the go-to grocery store for residents for decades. Unfortunately, it’s all coming to an end — as the store is expected to close its doors on August 9, 2025. (The location may close sooner.) And, as with any store closing, they’re currently holding a going out of business sale — from 50% to 90% off.

Now’s the time for bargain hunters to take advantage of the closeout discounts and stock up on many groceries and household essentials — especially those brands and items that rarely go on sale.
UPDATE: Our team personally visited the store on August 7, 2025 and the selection is minimal. However, there are a still a few great deals to be found — if you’re willing to search through every pile of items left on the shelves. We would not make a special trip to the store, but, if you live or work nearby, it might be worth a visit.
There were still some items in health & beauty at 80% off, so now’s the time to stock up on all of those expensive creams, cleansers, lotions, soaps and over-the-counter medicines! Shop as soon as possible for the best selection.
Note: The location no longer honors any offers, discounts or coupons featured in Safeway’s weekly ad. In addition, the store’s Starbucks café is now permanently closed.

Here are the current discounts available by department:
The discount applies to the lowest marked price.
Fresh & Frozen Meat / Produce — 50% off
Seafood / Delicatessen / Food Service — 50% off
Dairy (excludes milk) — 50% off
Grocery / Frozen Foods — 70% off
General Merchandise / Health & Beauty Aids — 80% off
Greeting Cards / Floral — 90% off
Currently, the store’s hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. However, hours are subject to change.
MHOTC Tip: Right now, the discounts aren’t great by most bargain hunters’ standards. The savings really kick in at 50% off storewide and are the best at 75% off or more. The only downside is that the selection gets smaller with each passing day. It pays to watch the sale closely and wait until the prices really drop. That’s the time to make a special trip and fill up your cart. Our team hopes to update the post as often as possible.
Our team was told the store expects to drop prices every Thursday, but this has not been officially confirmed by Safeway.

BUMMER, this has been my go-to store for the last 10 years, even though it is farther than KS. I’m at 1st and Wads, so, the other Safeways are to far to justify the gas, time.
