X marks the spot and the spot is Northglenn for this year’s Pirate Festival on Saturday, September 21 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at E. B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park. Young and old alike are welcome to join in a FREE full day of pirate ruckus. Again this year: entry to the Pirate Ball on Friday, September 20 will be FREE (pay for dinner and drink on the side).
During the Festival, young’uns can bounce houses, arts n’ crafts, archery, contests, mermaids, treasure hunts ‘n more. Older mateys can try their hand at physical feats ‘o strength, cardboard boat regatta watching (or racing), plenty of drinkin’ of mead, rum and ale, walking around in costume, sword fighting, archery and more.
This year’s event includes three stages of entertainment, with performances by Boo Hoo Crew, Finnegan’s Wake, Indigent Row and Windover Tide among others. Some 50 vendors will also be on hand.
The Cardboard Regatta (extra fee) is a test of boat making and racing skills. Teams compete for prizes and fame. Organizers warn there will be tests (cannonballs, skeletons, and other crazy bits) to make the challenge even more challenging.
Festivities actually begin on Friday, September 20 with the Pirate Ball from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Like last year, entry is FREE to the bash for the 18+ crowd. Pirate Ball will include music on the Main Stage including Chancer’s Hooley at 5:30 p.m. and Big Paddy at 8 p.m., opening of the mermaid stage, sword fighting, a dinner, a walk-around treasure map contest, crowning of the “Pirate King”, and drinks.
This will be a social engagement for pirates and costumes will be encouraged (if not expected). Best dressed pirates will be asked to compete in our Pirate costume contest for prizes. Dinner and drinks including mead, rum and beer may be purchased from individual vendors.
The park is located at 11701 Community Center Dr., Northglenn.
