Benchmark Theatre is a new, professional theatre company that launched its first, full season in 2017. Their next production is the regional premiere of an adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984, which opens Friday March 15 and runs through Saturday, April 13 at The Bench at 40W. General admission is $30 ($25 for students, seniors and military), but on Thursdays tickets are half-price.
Called complex, harrowing and ingenious, this award-winning Broadway production rocked audiences with its fearlessness and sheer brutality. Winston, living under the totalitarian rule of the Party, has the idea of writing a diary. It is a crime punishable by death and there is no way of knowing if he is being watched.
He imagines two futures — in one, a future readership in a free society who thinks of him as a hero; in the other, he is caught, executed and forgotten. Perhaps both things are true. He writes the year, so far as he knows it: 1984.
Thursday performances are March 21, March 28, April 4 and April 11 at 8 p.m. The play is a one-act with no intermission and not suitable for those under age 15. Buy tickets here.
