Dig out those hula hoops! Union Station hosts Buskerfest this weekend. Buskers are street performers who demonstrate such skills as juggling, hoops, fire skills, unicycling and more. The festival kicks off Friday, June 23 at 5 p.m. with a hula-hooping flash mob led by Marawa The Amazing. Gora Gora Orkestar, Colorado’s premiere brass band, will play while world-record-holding hula hooping maven Marawa teaches a quick lesson and leads the group in a routine. The community is encouraged to join in and participants may bring their own hoop or buy one onsite.
The varied and imaginative proceedings continue on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Other Festival performers include USA Breakdancers, Magic Brian with his comedy, magic and sideshow act, and Sam Malcolm, a young world class juggler and comedian. Marawa The Amazing will offer hooping workshops in the gym of the Oxford Hotel. You can register here.
Local performers Bekah Smith and Warren Hammond of the Updown Circus School in Boulder, will offer onsite workshops for children on Saturday hourly from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Face painters will be on hand Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and giant 17-foot puppets and stiltwalkers will roam the plaza.
Board & Brush will provide materials to make a Colorado keepsake flag. The Arts Street students have cool black and white photo postcards from images of last year’s Festival for visitors to color and mail.
Artocade art cars are making the journey from Trinidad to join in the festivities. Short and feature length films curated by the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema team, will be screened in the lower level gallery of Union Station throughout the Festival providing a break from the sun.
Festival goers may also explore a Tesla and bid on the chance to take it home (or wherever) for 24 hours. Proceeds from this and Union Station vendors will benefit Arts Street. The 2017 Union Station Buskerfest program also includes a scavenger hunt with treats for successful hunters
You’ll find a full schedule here. The event is FREE, but buskers do work for tips, so be ready. Union Station at 1701 Wynkoop St. can be reached by public transportation, including lightrail and the 16th Street Mall Shuttle.
