Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated annually that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.
This holiday originated in Galveston, Texas, where on this date in 1865 — following the Civil War — slaves were declared free under the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
In addition, the holiday is observed for celebrating Black culture and the progress continuing to be made in our society.
