Juneteenth Celebration in Longmont

POSTED BY
Laura

Longmont holds its Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Roosevelt Park. The FREE family-oriented event is free to the public and promises to be an afternoon day filled with music, entertainment, and cultural significance. Headliner will be Grammy award-winning artist Chrisette Michele, known for her soulful and captivating performances.

In addition to the incredible musical talent of Michele, the event will feature a lineup of talented DJs who will keep the energy high throughout the day.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to indulge in a variety of delicious food options from local food trucks and explore a diverse range of vendors offering unique products and services.

Shiquita Yarbrough, Juneteenth celebration event planner, local community leader, and the first Black woman elected to Longmont City Council, expressed her enthusiasm about the event, stating, “We’re excited to be bringing our Juneteenth celebration to Longmont for its third year. It’s a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate our shared heritage.”

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated annually that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

This holiday originated in Galveston, Texas, where on this date in 1865 — following the Civil War — slaves were declared free under the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.

In addition, the holiday is observed for celebrating Black culture and the progress continuing to be made in our society.
