Free Tours of the U.S. Mint in Denver

POSTED BY
Bryan

Sometimes, we forget about the treasures right in our own backyard. If you’ve ever wondered how to make money or have visitors in town, Denver has one of the best experiences right in its back pocket. Established in 1863, the U.S. Mint of Denver produces 50 million coins a day, each one stamped with a little “D.” FREE tours show every step in the process of turning dull, blank metal slugs into shiny pocket change.

Guided tours are offered Monday through Thursday (no tours on Federal Holidays.) They run about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It’s very important that you note the procedure for getting tour tickets.

You must reserve tickets in advance online. In-person tickets are no longer available. Online reservations are available on a first-come, first-serve basis up to 30 days in advance through the Mint’s Tour Reservation System.

Reservations are released for online booking at 1 a.m. Mountain Standard Time. Tours are conducted Monday through Thursday (excluding observed federal holidays) at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Free tickets are limited to 5 per person, per online request and email on the Tour Reservation System. All visitors must be age 7 or older.

The Denver Mint offers up to six tours a day with a maximum of 50 people on each tour.

There may be days that tours are not available, and tours may be cancelled without prior notice. Please be aware that coin production schedules vary. Coins may not be in production during your tour.

Staff cannot accept reservation requests via e-mail or phone.

Visitors must present officers a tour confirmation either printed or on their mobile device to gain entry. You will need a photo ID. Lost tickets cannot be replaced and are non-transferable.

All visitors must be at the tour entrance located on Cherokee St. 30 minutes before their scheduled tour time. Late arrivals will not be admitted.  There is an extensive list of prohibited items, including all purses and bags. The Mint does not provide lockers or storage for any items.

Permitted items:

  • A palm-sized wallet that fits in your pocket
  • Powered off cameras/cell phones. Photography is prohibited while on the tour
  • Umbrellas, walkers, wheelchairs
  • Empty water bottles
  • Medical items necessary for the safety and well-being of the visitor

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to:

  • Handbags, purses, fanny packs, tote bags, backpacks, packages, and bags
  • Food and drinks
  • Lighters and matches
  • Weapons, including pocketknives and personal protective devices such as pepper spray

The Mint does not provide parking, but there are meters and pay lots within a few blocks of the Mint.
