In a city where history and the present collide daily, two of Denver’s most storied cultural institutions are joining forces this July. The Historic Elitch Theatre is proud to welcome Su Teatro for two special performances on Saturday & Sunday, July 18 & 19, 2026, of their acclaimed production Just Like Us as part of the 2026 Elitch Encore summer series.

It doesn’t get more Denver than this.
A play about four young women coming of age in this very city — set against the backdrop of a nation wrestling with questions of identity and belonging — performed inside the theatre that has stood at the heart of Denver’s cultural life for 135 years.
In a national moment defined by urgent debate over immigration and what it means to be American, Just Like Us brings those debates home.
Based on journalist Helen Thorpe’s acclaimed book of the same name, Just Like Us is an eye-opening, poignant true story about the experiences of four young Latina women navigating high school and young adulthood in Denver — two of them citizens, two of them undocumented.
The play explores themes of identity, friendship, and the profound inequities that can exist in U.S. society. It poses difficult, necessary questions about what truly makes someone American — and audiences are leaving performances moved, challenged, and changed.
At a moment when immigration dominates headlines and national policy, Su Teatro’s production strips away the abstractions and puts a human face — four very real, very relatable faces — on the story.
This is not a debate. This is a play about friends. And that, say audiences who have seen it, makes all the difference.
