Denver Gives Away Free Mulch, Sells Compost

Ever wonder what happens to all those Christmas trees or fallen leaves you leave out for recycling collection? They’re turned into mulch and compost. Denver residents can buy low-cost compost during the Compost Sale from Friday to Sunday, April 29 to May 1 and/or get their hands on FREE mulch on Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or while supplies last) during the annual Mulch Giveaway.

Compost Info

Bags of compost will be sold at participating Ace Hardware stores for the discounted price of $5 per bag (plus tax). You can buy during regular store hours while supplies last. Ace Hardware stores open at 8 a.m. on Saturdays.

Bulk compost will be sold at two A1 Organics locations on Saturday, April 30 ONLY from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $30 per cubic yard (plus tax). Free loaders will be available at the bulk sites.

Compost for $5 per bag (+ tax) will be offered at:

  • Ace Hardware – Cherry Creek (1427 S. Holly St.)
  • Ace Hardware – Alameda Station (417 S. Broadway)
  • Ace Hardware – University Hills (2500 S. Colorado Blvd.)
  • Ace Hardware – Tamarac Square (3333 S. Tamarac Dr.)
  • Ace Hardware – Ace on the Fax (7100 E. Colfax Ave.)
  • Ace Hardware – Edgewater (1719 Sheridan Blvd.) 

Bulk compost** at $30 per cubic yard (+ tax) will be sold at:

  • A1 Organics – Commerce City (9109 Monaco St., Henderson, CO 80640)
  • A1 Organics – Sheridan (2300 Radcliff Ave., Sheridan, CO 80110)

**Trucks and trailers only, and all loads must be tarped and secured. Minimum bulk purchase of one cubic yard.

Mulch Info

Dig-your-own FREE mulch sites will be set up at:

Veterans Park (Iowa St. & Vine St.)

Bear Creek Park (south of Dartmouth Ave. on Raleigh St.)

Sloan’s Lake Park (Sheridan Blvd. & 17th Ave.)

Havana Nursery (10450 Smith Rd., just south of I-70). Besides dig-your-own, will also have loader service for trucks and trailers.

Reminders:

  • Please bring your own pitchfork or shovel, and bags or containers for loading mulch.
  • Bring a tarp to cover your truck or trailer.
  • Due to limited quantities, Denver residents only.
  • All event attendees must wear masks at all times, at ALL locations, and even while in their own personal vehicles.
  • Commercial vehicles are prohibited from taking or selling the City’s mulch or compost.
