Is there a more perfect place than Loveland from which to send your Valentine’s Day cards? We don’t think so. Through February 7, you can drop off your cards and love letters at any King Soopers or City Market (in large boxes by the customer service desk.) The grocery chain will then send them to the Loveland Post Office in time to get the world-famous ♥Loveland, CO♥ postmark. January 31 – Last Day for Holiday Returns

Tuesday, January 31 is just one week away. Why is the date important? Well, it’s the last day for holiday returns and exchanges. Most retailers (not all) changed their return policy by extending their usual 30-,45- or 60-day limit to January 31 for most purchases made in November and December. The one catch – you still need to have a receipt. However, some retailers also changed their “no receipt, no return” policy by allowing customers to get store credit for an unwanted gift without a receipt. The basic rule: If you’re unsure of a store’s holiday return policy, don’t assume, simply call and ask. Wouldn’t you rather have some money in your pocket than have that hideous kitten sweater from your Aunt Martha sitting in your closet for years gathering dust?

MHOTC does not pretend to be a consumer watchdog, but a local TV news has been all over a hyped “bankruptcy liquidation sale” in Highlands Ranch that sounds a whole lot better than it reportedly is. In case you missed the news last night, check out the report by Channel 7 about a sale that, to many customers, seemed to be more like a flea market of miscellaneous stuff from multiple vendors. There were also complaints that there was a $5 fee to get into the sale that was not advertised. The sale is supposed to run for five weeks, but with the attention it has gotten, that might not happen. As always, buyer beware!

Google Offers Latest Player in Deal of the Day Game

Seeing how Google is the 800-pound gorilla of the Internet, it should come as no surprise that the company has entered the group buying (deal-of-the-day) arena. Google Offers works like most other sites (sign up, get an email with the deal of the day, if you like it then buy the voucher and so on) but they do seem to be leveraging their global reach at the national level. That means at Google Offers you’ll find not only local deals (recent ones were for an aromatherapy massage, ice cream, Mexican food from Illegal Pete’s and outdoor apparel at 123 Mountain in Lakewood), but savings at brand name stores (brick and mortar and online) like Crocs, NewEgg or Toys”R”Us. As always we recommend you take a test drive by signing up (it’s free) and seeing if you like their deals. If nothing appeals, you can always easily cancel your subscription. For now, Google Offers is not on the MHOTC Daily Deals page.

We’ve been enthusiastic about Boulder County Barter ever since we first heard about it as a way to save money by trading goods and services with pre-screened members. We have been reading and hearing more and more about other ways to economize and strengthen community at the same time. Sunset magazine published a piece called “The Economy of Sharing” about what they are calling “the age of sharing” in the San Francisco Bay area. They cited half-a-dozen exchange systems. Even “NBC Nightly News” profiled a 15-year-old organization in Portland, Maine, called the Hour Exchange, in which some 500 members put hours of skills into a “time bank” and withdraw other skills by the hour when they need them. Food for thought as 2012 dawns.

Free Nuggets Skills Challenge Underway

The Denver Nuggets, in conjunction with the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association, has organized the seventh annual basketball Skills Challenge. Boys and girls aged 7 to 14 are encouraged to test their dribbling, passing and shooting skills at local competitions throughout the state. A handful have started already, Parker is today, December 17 and Arapahoe Park is Tuesday, December 20, but the vast majority take place in January. At the bottom of the page is a link to the online schedule and contact phone numbers for more information on event location and time. One boy and one girl from each local competition will advance to sectional competitions for the opportunity to compete at the finals in March. Last year, 72 finalists emerged from more than 3,000 participants at recreation centers across Colorado.

It seems you can always find a good deal at thrift shops even without a sale. However, a sale does make it more thrifty and fun.
