While we don’t advocate taking part in research surveys as a full-time occupation, those with the time and inclination can earn cash and gift cards for major retailers. Most of the major players operate in a similar fashion. You register your email address and then complete a basic questionnaire, outlining your background (age, gender, where you live) and interests. Then the company matches you with appropriate surveys. For every completed survey you receive points or credits. Those, in turn, are exchanged for gift cards and sometimes even real currency (via PayPal). Here are a few to check out. All cost nothing to join and you can unsubscribe at any time. MHOTC tip: Some sites ask for a ton of personal information. Only divulge as much as you feel comfortable. Should any ask for credit card or bank account numbers, just say no. Instead sign up for am additional account. That way, if you get flooded with email or spam, you can simply walk away.

This is one of those cases where you spend money to save money. We’re talking about the warehouse clubs. Sam’s Club is especially aggressive with its discounting during the holidays, meaning you can find some terrific savings on gifts (like books, movies and electronics), holiday decorations, party supplies and super-size grocery items (anyone for 10 pounds of chocolate chips?). In fact, the latest issue of ShopSmart magazine from Consumer Reports found almost all grocery items on their list were at least 20% cheaper at warehouse stores than other retailers. Other great deals were on batteries, tissue, cereal, and aluminum foil. Plus club “extras” like eyeglasses, gasoline, cell-phone service and health screenings make your membership pay for itself. While Sam’s Club has a variety of memberships, the two basics are: Business Membership at $35, which gets you early entry into the store, plus one primary, one household and one company card. Any kind of business qualifies (even if you are self-employed, as long as you can prove the business exists — we recommend bringing in a checkbook or business cards with your “company” name). An Advantage Membership is better suited to families who can’t join through their employer. For $40 you receive one primary card and one household card. Members of the military can obtain membership for $15 annually, but you can’t sign up online, only at a Sam’s Club itself (be sure to bring proper I.D.).
