In recognition of National Girls and Women in Sport Day, CU Boulder is adding freebies to tomorrow’s women’s basketball game against Arizona State. Doors at the Coors Events Center’s northwest entrance open at 5 p.m. for a FREE skills and fitness for children in the 8th grade and below. CU women athletes host these stations to challenge and encourage youngsters. The first 500 kids to complete these stations each gets a FREE CU T-shirt and snacks courtesy of White Wave Foods. Kids and parents who arrive by 5:45 p.m. also get FREE entry game, which begins at 7 p.m.

Unfortunately, here we go again with another store closing. The Blockbuster at 705 S. Colorado Blvd. is closing its doors for good on February 19. Currently, all previously-viewed DVDs and Blu-rays are $6.99 or less. On the other side, new DVDs and Blu-rays are 30% off. Most everything else in the store (snacks, toys and gifts) are 10% to 50% off. During our visit yesterday, the shelves were still full with a wide selection of DVDs, Blu-rays and games. We also noticed a table with cases of candy at 30% off. Right now, the store hours are limited, so you may want to call (303-722-4224) before making a special trip.

This is the best movie deal we’ve seen in a long time. Unfortunately, it’s only available at select United Artists (aka Regal Cinemas) theaters – Greenwood Plaza Stadium (8141 E. Arapahoe Rd., Englewood), Meadows Stadium (9355 Park Meadows Dr., Littleton) and Twin Peaks (1250 S. Hover Rd., Longmont.) Every Sunday, including today, January 1, the three movie theaters offer Value Days – all movies are just $5. We especially love the deal because it includes new releases, which is a rarity. However, there is an additional cost of $3.50 per ticket for 3-D. (A “Value Days” ticket is the lowest possible admission the movie chain offers and that includes senior, student and military discounts, as well as coupons.) Longmont residents are even more fortunate because Twin Peaks offers Value Days every Tuesday, too!

Don’t be so quick to toss out your empty popcorn bucket! Did you know AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas offers one FREE refill (during the same visit) on a large popcorn? It’s a smart move for budget-conscious families or friends. Why pay for 2 or 3 small popcorns, when you can share one for less money? We’ve seen some super-prepared parents bring their own empty lunch sacks, fill them up first thing for each of the kids and then head right back to the concession stand for the FREE refill for themselves. The offer also includes one FREE refill on large sodas, but sharing is bit more complicated. MHOTC Tip: There’s no rule that says you can’t refill your bucket after the movie and take some popcorn home for a special treat later. A quick warm-up in the microwave and it’s just like being at the movies again!

Blockbuster’s Unlimited Kids & Family Rentals for $4.99

We know kids can watch lots of movies (sometimes the same one over and over and over…), so Blockbuster‘s Kids Pass is perfect for families – especially during the holiday break. A 1-month pass is only $4.99 for unlimited Kids and Family movie and game rentals. If you’re in it for the long haul, a 6-month pass is $24.99 and a 1 year pass is $39.99. (Obviously, the annual pass is the best deal – making the final cost per month only $3.33.) Of course, there is the fine print: One rental out-at-a-time, valid only at store of initial purchase and limit one pass per membership account at any time. Plus, only 99¢ movie and game rentals are included in the promo. You can keep your rental as long as you want, so you can have a month-long film festival of the same movie or 30 different ones. If you rented a movie every day of the year (assuming you get the annual pass), each one would be about 11¢! Any way you play it, it’s an amazing deal for budget-conscious moms and dads.

We normally don’t like loyalty programs with a membership fee. However, if you go the movies often, AMC Theatres‘ recently introduced rewards program, AMC Stubs, will make the “director’s cut.” The annual membership fee is $12. However, you get lots of benefits, including a $10 reward to spend however you want (even on gift cards) for every $100 you spend, FREE upgrades (small to medium or medium to large) on fountain drinks & popcorn anytime and all fees are waived for online ticket purchases from Fandango or MovieTickets.com. You earn one point for every dollar you spend on tickets and concessions with no limits (unlike Regal Cinemas’ Crown Club.) Plus, you get 4 membership cards to share with friends and family, so you can earn rewards faster. With the high-price of “going to the movies”, you could easily earn 50 points in a single visit. And, as an added bonus, they offer sneak preview screenings for members only. (That’s almost worth the annual membership fee alone!) You can sign-up online or in person at the theatre box office.
